Hello, everyone!  It is an honor for me to be a guest blogger here today on Kelsey's beautiful blog, Purply Pink Me.

First, let me introduce myself.  I am Laurie, photographer, writer, pianist, blogger, craftepreneur, a Christian.  My blog is Crown of Life Photography, home of the challenge Better than Best.  I love all things retro/vintage, fashion, graphic arts, technology, and photography (need I say that?).  One of my favorite ways to spend a lazy day is buried in a good book (the kind that makes you want to read it all over once you finish).  I could spend hours playing swing music on our piano (and trying to dance at the same time).  I love Star Trek.  Anything else?  Ah, yes...we have an adorable dog named Sadie.  I think that's it for the introduction.  Nice to meet you.

Since my blog is a photography blog, I might as well center around that for the subject of my post, given the leeway by Kelsey to ramble on and on about whatever I like...(okay, so it's more of "talk about what you like").

I first started with photography about a year and a half ago when I discovered how fun it was to grab my parents' point and shoot and go traipsing off to take snapshots of whatever caught my fancy.  Then, my grandfather, who was once a photographer, started giving me tips.  And I realized that I had embarked on a journey that would take me places I had never dreamed.

In March of 2010, I bought my first camera, a pink Canon point and shoot.  Cute little thing...I used it until I had progressed enough that it no longer fit my needs.  Then, in February of this year, through a somewhat extraordinary chain of events, I received my Nikon D3100...the first dslr of my {hope to be} career.  Just last month, I purchased Photoshop Elements 9.  It's only gone from there!

I'm not much of one for setting up photoshoots of inanimate objects...but I love to shoot people!  (PSE helps...my favorite action is CoffeeShop Perfect Portrait 3.)

Of course, I'm not saying I don't like inanimate objects (what would life be without them?).  In fact, I love them.  Especially the ones called flowers.

Some advice for other photographers (and for myself):

- Don't be afraid to try anything new, whether shooting or editing.

- Try to improve your photography every time you take pictures....dare yourself to a new level of excellence!

- Don't be intimidated by others' levels of expertise or motivation.  You have your own learning curve; let it circle around the way it wants!

- Try not to be too self-conscious when shooting in public.  Yes, you might get a few stares, but don't let it scare you off.  This is part of being a photographer...getting out there and shooting!

- Read books--drench yourself in good pictures!  Before you know it, you'll be taking them yourself, just from unconscious observation.

- Photography takes practice, just like any other art.  Takes pictures of anything. Everything.  All the time.  Don't be upset (for instance) if your first landscape pictures don't look like Ansel Adams'...it's a learned art!

Well, thanks for listening to my rambles...and a big thank you to Kelsey for "having me over for tea!"

Happy shooting!

~Laurie
